OpenAI, a U.S.-based AI company, Opens First Asian Office in Tokyo

‍ ‍

OpenAI announced on April 15 that it has established its first Asian office in Tokyo, marking a key step in its expansion into the Japanese market. The company also launched a local subsidiary, OpenAI Japan, to strengthen partnerships with government, businesses, and research institutions.

‍ ‍

As part of its market entry strategy, OpenAI plans to focus on enterprise adoption and industry-specific use cases. Its services are already used by over 2 million people weekly in Japan, with major companies like Daikin, Rakuten, and Toyota Connected adopting ChatGPT Enterprise.

‍ ‍

To localize its offerings, OpenAI will introduce a Japanese-optimized GPT-4 model with improved performance in translation and summarization, and faster processing speeds. The API for this model is expected to be released in the coming months.

‍ ‍

The company aims to collaborate closely with local stakeholders and align with Japan’s supportive AI policies to drive productivity, innovation, and safe AI deployment across industries.
