US AI Startup Anthropic Opens First Asia-Pacific Office in Tokyo

‍ ‍

US AI startup Anthropic, the company behind the generative AI model “Claude,” officially opened its first Asia-Pacific office in Tokyo in April 2026, marking the company’s full-scale entry into the Japanese market. Known as a major competitor to OpenAI, Anthropic focuses on AI safety and enterprise generative AI.

CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and other government officials to discuss support for Japan’s AI ecosystem. The company also signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Japan AI Safety Institute (AISI) to jointly develop AI evaluation methods and safety standards. Through close collaboration with the Japanese government, Anthropic aims to strengthen its “AI safety-first” brand positioning.

Japan has become Claude’s largest market in Asia, with major companies including Rakuten, NRI Group, and Panasonic adopting the platform. Anthropic plans to further expand partnerships with Japanese enterprises and accelerate growth in the enterprise AI market. The company is also strengthening its presence in the cultural sector through collaborations with the Mori Art Museum and other creative initiatives.
